Oxnard Falls to Canyon in Heartbreaking Overtime Playoff Loss

OXNARD, Calif. — Oxnard boys basketball’s CIF Southern Section playoff run came to an end Friday night at home, as the Yellowjackets fell to Canyon 70-67 in overtime in a Division 2 second-round matchup.

The game stayed close deep into the fourth quarter, with Oxnard giving itself a chance to extend its season in front of its home crowd. The Yellowjackets battled through every possession and forced overtime, but Canyon made the final plays in the extra period to survive and advance.

Oxnard entered the second round after a narrow 45-43 win over North Torrance earlier in the week. That first-round victory gave the Yellowjackets momentum, and they carried the same toughness into Friday’s matchup against Canyon.

Even when Canyon created separation, Oxnard continued to answer. The Yellowjackets stayed within striking distance, made key plays late in regulation and pushed the game into overtime. But in the final minutes, Canyon held on just enough to end Oxnard’s postseason run.

The three-point loss ended Oxnard’s season one step short of the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals. For the Yellowjackets, it was a painful finish after coming so close to another playoff win on their home floor.

Canyon advanced to the quarterfinal round, while Oxnard closed its season after one of its most emotional games of the year.

Although the result did not go Oxnard’s way, the Yellowjackets showed the same fight that carried them into the postseason. They won a close first-round game, pushed Canyon into overtime and proved they could compete under pressure.

For Oxnard, the loss was heartbreaking, but the playoff run still reflected a strong finish to the season.
