Hosted by Academy Sports + Outdoors in partnership with Nike and Jordan Brand, the two-day tournament welcomed middle and high school athletes from across Texas and beyond, providing an opportunity for the next generation of basketball talent to compete while honoring the city’s deep-rooted connection to the sport.

While the action on the court brought plenty of excitement, one of the weekend’s most significant moments happened away from the competition.

Academy Sports + Outdoors presented a $30,000 donation to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater

Houston, reinforcing the event’s commitment to supporting local youth and creating opportunities

beyond basketball.

Basketball Hall of Famer and Houston Comets legend Sheryl Swoopes joined the festivities,

bringing energy and excitement to the inaugural event while helping present the donation.

Swoopes’ presence carried special significance for a tournament designed to celebrate Houston’s basketball heritage. A four-time WNBA champion with the Houston Comets, Swoopes helped establish the city as a powerhouse in women’s professional basketball, making her involvement a meaningful connection between Houston’s championship history and its emerging talent.

Honoring Houston’s basketball roots Houston has long been a city where basketball culture runs deep, from neighborhood courts and grassroots programs to championship-winning professional teams. The H-Town Classic was created to pay homage to that history while providing young athletes with opportunities to compete, develop their skills, and experience the excitement of a large-scale basketball event.“Houston’s basketball tradition runs deep, and we’re proud to partner with Nike and Jordan Brand to continue the legacy with the H-Town Classic,” said Steve Lawrence, Chief Executive Officer of

Academy Sports + Outdoors. “This tournament captures the excitement and community spirit that make basketball such an important part of our city while creating opportunities for athletes of all skill levels to participate, compete and have fun.”

That commitment to accessibility and community is reflected in the tournament’s approximately 100 participating teams, including competitors traveling from outside Texas.

The tournament features a fast-paced, three-on-three format across four divisions: middle school boys, middle school girls, high school boys, and high school girls.

With teams competing across multiple courts, the event provides an environment where athletes can showcase their abilities, test themselves against new competition, and experience the energy of Houston’s basketball community.

For many participants, the tournament represents more than another weekend of games. It is an opportunity to compete on a larger stage while becoming part of a new tradition celebrating the city’s basketball identity.

Investing in the next generation

Beyond the competition, the H-Town Classic places community investment at the center of its

mission.

The $30,000 contribution to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Houston highlights the role organizations and community partnerships can play in expanding opportunities for young people. The organization provides youth with access to mentorship, educational resources, recreational activities, and programs designed to encourage personal development and long-term success.

For young athletes, access to organized sports can provide far more than physical activity. Basketball offers opportunities to develop leadership skills, build confidence, establish friendships, and learn the importance of teamwork and perseverance.

By combining competitive basketball with charitable giving, the H-Town Classic demonstrates how sports can serve as a bridge between Houston’s celebrated basketball traditions and the opportunities available to future generations. Swoopes’ participation further reinforced that connection, bringing one of the city’s most recognizable basketball figures together with young athletes who are beginning to write their own stories.

Her presence served as a reminder of what is possible for the next generation of players, particularly those who dream of one day competing at the highest levels of the sport.

Championship Sunday awaits Following Saturday’s opening-round action, the competition continues Sunday, October 18, when the inaugural H-Town Classic champions will be crowned. Teams across all four divisions entered the weekend hoping to advance through the competition and earn a place in the tournament’s history.

Saturday’s action left several teams undefeated, while others remained in contention despite suffering their first loss. With championship titles on the line, Sunday’s matchups will determine which teams emerge victorious from the inaugural event.

The tournament’s combination of youth competition, community support, and Houston basketball history creates an opportunity to establish a new tradition within the city’s sports landscape.

For the athletes taking the court this weekend, the experience extends beyond winning games or lifting a championship trophy. It is about competing alongside talented peers, representing their communities, and becoming part of a celebration of the sport that has shaped generations of Houston athletes.

As the inaugural H-Town Classic heads into its final day, the event has already made an impact through its investment in local youth and its celebration of the city’s basketball heritage. And while champions will be crowned Sunday, the tournament’s larger legacy may be found in the opportunities it creates for the next generation of Houston basketball.
