MOORPARK, Calif. — The CIF Southern Section Masters Meet brought championship-level pressure to Moorpark High School on Saturday, with some of Southern California’s top track and field athletes competing for a chance to advance to the CIF State Championships in Clovis.

The meet served as the final Southern Section stage before the state championships in Clovis, where athletes needed either automatic qualifying spots or at-large marks to keep their seasons alive. The Southern Section’s depth was on display across the track, from record-breaking sprint performances to strong distance races and relay battles. The CIF-SS postseason advances from divisional prelims to finals, then to the Masters Meet before the CIF State Championships.

Calabasas had one of the strongest sprint showings of the meet, especially on the girls’ side. Malia Rainey won the girls’ 100 meters in 11.33 seconds, leading a deep group of Coyotes sprinters. Devyn Sproles finished second in 11.41, Marley Scoggins placed fourth in 11.46 and Olivia Kirk finished sixth in 11.62, giving Calabasas four of the top six spots in one of the fastest events of the day.

The Coyotes also made an impact in the girls’ 200 meters. Kirk finished second in 23.54 seconds, while Rainey, Sproles and Scoggins also gave Calabasas a strong presence in the event. On the boys’ side, Kingston Celifie added another sprint result for Calabasas, finishing sixth in the 100 meters in 10.37 seconds.

Oaks Christian also had several athletes competing at a high level across different events. Delaney Napierala led the Lions with a fourth-place finish in the girls’ 1600 meters, running 4:49.42 to secure an automatic qualifying spot for the state meet. The performance put Napierala in a strong position heading into Clovis and gave Oaks Christian one of its top results of the day.

In the boys’ 1600 meters, Oaks Christian was represented by Vin Krueger and Arizechkwu Nwosu in a deep field. Krueger finished sixth in 4:10.01, while Nwosu placed 12th. Nwosu also competed in the boys’ 800 meters, adding another event for the Lions at the Masters level.

Oaks Christian also had athletes in the girls’ sprint events. Rayah Rodriguez finished 13th in the girls’ 400 meters in 55.65 seconds, just outside the at-large standard of 55.60. Savanah Williams finished 15th in the same event in 56.40 and also competed in the girls’ 200 meters. The Lions’ girls’ 4x400 relay team placed 10th in 3:53.11.

Beyond the local programs, the meet included several of the biggest storylines in California high school track and field. Long Beach Wilson’s girls’ 4x400 relay team broke Long Beach Poly’s long-standing California record with a time of 3:33.83. Clara Adams also broke the Southern Section record in the 400 meters, running 51.98 seconds and establishing herself as one of the top athletes to watch at the state championships.

Servite also remained one of the major boys’ teams to watch. Junior Benjamin Harris continued his standout sprint season with a wind-aided 10.17 in the 100 meters, one of the fastest all-conditions times in state history. Servite’s sprint depth and relay strength make the Friars a key contender heading into the final weekend of the season.

Now the attention turns to Buchanan High in Clovis, where Southern Section athletes will try to turn their Masters Meet performances into state championship results. For programs like Calabasas and Oaks Christian, Saturday’s meet was both a test and a final step toward competing against the best in California.
