Athletes Shine at Tara Davis Invitational Track Meet

AGOURA HILLS, Calif. — The Tara Davis Invitational brought high school track and field athletes from across the region to Agoura High on Saturday, giving runners, jumpers and throwers an early-season chance to compete in one of the area’s most energetic meets.
Named after Olympic long jumper and Agoura High alum Tara Davis-Woodhall, the invitational has quickly become more than a regular track meet. It combines strong competition with a larger celebration of track and field, giving young athletes a chance to compete at a meet connected to one of the sport’s biggest names.
The meet featured a full schedule of sprint, distance, hurdle, relay and field events. Athletes competed throughout the day, with teams using the invitational as an early test before league meets and CIF competition later in the season.
On the track, the sprint events brought some of the biggest energy of the day. Athletes exploded out of the blocks in the 100 meters and 200 meters, while relay teams worked to stay clean through exchanges and finish strong down the final straightaway.
The hurdles also produced competitive races, with athletes needing both speed and rhythm to stay ahead. In the girls 100-meter hurdles, St. Bernard senior Lorrin Hervey won the varsity race in 15.15 seconds, followed closely by Windward sophomore Nia Faulknor in 15.30. Camarillo sophomore Lilyanna Tesch placed third in 16.42, giving Ventura County a strong finish in one of the meet’s technical events.
The relay events gave teams a chance to show their depth. Thousand Oaks won the boys junior varsity 4x100 relay in 44.37 seconds, while Newbury Park captured the boys varsity 4x100 relay in 40.96. Those races helped set the tone for a meet that rewarded both individual talent and team execution.
Field events were another major part of the day, especially because of the meet’s connection to Davis-Woodhall, whose high school and professional career have been built around jumps. Athletes in the long jump, high jump, pole vault and throwing events competed alongside the track races, giving the meet a full championship-style atmosphere.
For many athletes, the Tara Davis Invitational was an important early-season measuring point. Some were looking for personal records, while others were trying to build confidence and sharpen technique before the most important meets of the spring.
The meet also gave local schools a chance to compete against programs they may not always see during league competition. That variety made the day valuable for athletes and coaches, especially with CIF Southern Section postseason goals still ahead.
By the end of the day, the Tara Davis Invitational had delivered strong performances, competitive races and a positive atmosphere around the sport. For the athletes, it was a chance to test themselves. For Agoura, it was another opportunity to honor one of its most accomplished alumni while bringing the track and field community together.
As the season continues, many of the athletes who competed Saturday will look to build from their performances at Agoura High. The Tara Davis Invitational served as an early reminder that the path to league titles, CIF success and personal bests often starts with meets like this one.
