Why Student Journalists Deserve Better Access to Media Credentials

Dear Athletic Communications Professionals,

My name is Peter Zhan, and I am a student journalist and the founder of Sideline Frames. Over the past year, I have covered college and professional sporting events and have learned how important student journalism is to schools and communities. Through this experience, I have also seen the challenges many independent student journalists face when applying for media credentials.

Student journalists play an important role in documenting athletic events, telling student-athlete stories, and keeping communities informed. Many of us spend countless hours writing articles, taking photographs, and learning the responsibilities of ethical journalism. These experiences help prepare the next generation of reporters, photographers, and communications professionals.

While researching this issue for my Civic Action Project, I found that credential policies vary greatly between schools. Some universities provide clear information and support student media, while others have limited guidance or do not explain why applications are denied. I understand that space is limited and that athletic departments must prioritize media requests. However, I believe there are small changes that could make the process more transparent and supportive for qualified student journalists.

I respectfully encourage athletic departments to consider:

• Publishing clear credential guidelines and application requirements.

• Providing more transparency about credential decisions.

• Recognizing qualified independent student journalists alongside traditional student media.

• Creating educational opportunities that help students learn about sports journalism and media relations.

  
  

These suggestions are not intended to replace existing credential policies. Instead, they are meant to encourage communication and create more opportunities for students who are committed to responsible journalism.

A free and informed press is an important part of every community. By supporting student journalists, colleges and universities can help develop future media professionals while encouraging civic engagement and public understanding.
