UCLA Powers Past Purdue 52-38 in Big Ten Opener
PASADENA, Calif. — UCLA opened Big Ten play with its most explosive offensive performance of the season Saturday night, defeating Purdue 52-38 at the Rose Bowl to improve to 3-0 under first-year head coach Bob Chesney. The Bruins produced 645 yards of total offense, their highest total since 2019.
UCLA wasted little time establishing the tempo. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava connected with Semaj Morgan for a 20-yard touchdown on the Bruins’ opening possession, and the pair struck again later in the first quarter on a 27-yard score.

Purdue answered with an explosive passing attack of its own. Quarterback Ryan Browne found Xavier Townsend for a 75-yard touchdown on the Boilermakers’ first offensive play, beginning a night in which Purdue repeatedly challenged UCLA through the air.
The Bruins responded by leaning on their rushing attack. Wayne Knight scored from six yards out to give UCLA a 21-7 advantage, but Purdue fought back to tie the game before a Mateen Bhaghani field goal sent the Bruins into halftime with a 24-21 lead.
Purdue briefly moved ahead 28-24 early in the third quarter, but UCLA answered immediately. Anthony Woods broke through for a 16-yard touchdown run before Knight added his second score of the night, allowing the Bruins to regain control.
Knight became the centerpiece of UCLA’s offense as the game progressed. The running back finished with 177 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, giving him eight rushing touchdowns through the first three games of the season. UCLA finished with 369 rushing yards and averaged 7.7 yards per carry.
Iamaleava also delivered his best passing performance as a Bruin, completing 19 of 31 passes for a UCLA career-high 276 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. Morgan caught four passes for 72 yards and two scores, while Landon Ellis added his first receiving touchdown as a Bruin late in the fourth quarter.
Defensively, linebacker Sammy Omosigho provided several of the game’s biggest plays. He finished with a team-high 12 tackles, two sacks and two forced fumbles. Both forced fumbles helped create UCLA scoring opportunities, and his performance later earned him Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Purdue remained dangerous through the air until the closing minutes. Browne threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns, while Townsend finished with 162 receiving yards. The Boilermakers accumulated 488 total yards, but three turnovers proved costly against a UCLA offense that did not turn the ball over.
With Purdue still attempting to close the gap late, Rodrick Pleasant intercepted Browne at the UCLA goal line to end the Boilermakers’ final scoring threat and secure the victory.
