Sound Running Sunset Tour Delivers Fast Times at Occidental College

LOS ANGELES — The 2026 Sound Running Sunset Tour brought elite professional and collegiate athletes to Occidental College on Saturday, showcasing one of the premier meets on the summer track and field calendar.
Held at Jack Kemp Stadium, the World Athletics Silver Label meet served as a key opportunity for athletes preparing for their national championships and the World Athletics Championships. Competitors from around the world gathered in Los Angeles looking to post qualifying marks, personal bests and momentum heading into the second half of the outdoor season.
The evening featured a full schedule of sprint, middle-distance and distance events, with several races producing close finishes. The men’s 800 meters was one of the highlights of the meet, as Abraham Alvarado edged Yusuf Bizimana at the line, winning in 1:44.07 by just one-hundredth of a second. The women’s 800 meters was equally dramatic, with Makayla Paige holding off Emily Mackay, 1:58.14 to 1:58.17, in another photo finish.
The men’s 1,500 meters also produced a fast race, with John Reniewicki taking the victory in 3:33.59, while Shawnti Jackson sprinted to an impressive 11.00-second win in the women’s 100 meters. Olympic medalists Raevyn Rogers and Courtney Frerichs also returned to competition, adding international experience to an already deep field.
Throughout the night, athletes chased qualifying standards under ideal Southern California conditions. Sound Running’s reputation for producing fast races once again attracted a high-level field, with professional pacemakers helping set aggressive early tempos across several distance events.
