Reign FC Falls in Heartbreaking Late Collapse Against Gotham FC

NEW YORK — Reign FC came within minutes of securing a valuable road victory Saturday afternoon before Gotham FC scored three late goals to complete a dramatic 3-2 comeback at Icahn Stadium.

The visitors made an excellent start despite a lengthy weather delay before kickoff. Reign remained composed from the opening whistle and capitalized on its early opportunities to seize control of the match.

Mia Fishel opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 14th minute, giving Seattle an early lead and rewarding the team’s aggressive attacking approach. Just eight minutes later, Maddie Mercado doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish, putting Reign in command at 2-0.

Defensively, Seattle executed its game plan effectively throughout much of the match. The back line limited Gotham’s quality chances while the midfield disrupted the hosts’ rhythm, forcing Gotham to search for openings against a disciplined defensive shape.

As the second half progressed, Gotham increased the pressure by committing more players forward. Reign continued to defend with determination, absorbing wave after wave of attacks while looking to create opportunities on the counterattack.

The momentum shifted in the closing stages when Gotham pulled one goal back in the 81st minute. Although Reign still held the lead, the goal energized the home side and set up a tense finish.

Gotham found the equalizer in stoppage time, leveling the match in the 94th minute before completing the comeback just three minutes later with a dramatic game-winning goal.

For Reign FC, the result was a difficult one to accept after controlling large portions of the match and holding a two-goal advantage deep into the second half. The visitors showed organization, discipline and resilience for more than 90 minutes but were unable to withstand Gotham’s relentless late surge.

Despite the disappointing finish, Reign can take positives from its overall performance. The team created quality scoring opportunities, defended effectively for most of the afternoon and demonstrated the ability to compete with one of the league’s top clubs on the road.

The defeat serves as a painful reminder of how quickly momentum can change in the NWSL. Reign FC will now look to regroup and build on the positive stretches of its performance as it prepares for the next challenge on its schedule.
