LAFC Ends Winless Run With 2-0 Victory Over Red Bull New York
LOS ANGELES — LAFC returned to the win column Wednesday night, defeating Red Bull New York 2-0 at BMO Stadium behind goals from 17-year-old Jude Terry and newcomer Armindo Sieb.
After going six consecutive MLS matches without a victory, the Black & Gold entered the night looking to regain momentum during the final stretch of the regular season. LAFC controlled much of the match and limited New York’s opportunities while creating consistent pressure in the attacking third.
The breakthrough came in the 21st minute.
Yevhen Cheberko helped start the attack down the left side before the ball reached Son Heung-Min inside the penalty area. Son fired a left-footed attempt that goalkeeper Ethan Horvath stopped, but the rebound fell directly into the path of Terry.
The 17-year-old midfielder reacted quickly and finished from close range to put LAFC ahead 1-0, adding another major moment to his breakout season with the first team.
LAFC continued to generate chances throughout the opening half. The Black & Gold put five shots on target before halftime compared with just one for New York, but Horvath prevented the hosts from extending their advantage.
New York struggled to consistently threaten Hugo Lloris at the opposite end. LAFC’s back line remained organized and prevented the Red Bulls’ young attack from finding space in dangerous areas.
Son nearly doubled the advantage in the 78th minute. The South Korean forward found space near the six-yard box and drove a powerful left-footed shot toward goal, only to see his effort strike the crossbar.
Despite several missed opportunities, LAFC continued pushing for the second goal rather than settling for its one-goal advantage.
That insurance finally arrived deep into stoppage time.
Ryan Hollingshead drove forward along the left flank before finding Sieb near the edge of the penalty area. The second-half substitute struck a left-footed shot into the net in the 96th minute, sealing the 2-0 victory and scoring his first goal for LAFC since joining the club from Bayern Munich.
The late goal removed any remaining doubt and allowed LAFC to close out a much-needed three points at home.
Lloris finished the night with another clean sheet, his 12th of the MLS regular season, while LAFC set a new club record with its 13th shutout across all competitions this season.
For LAFC, the victory was about more than ending a six-match winless stretch. Terry’s opening goal provided another sign of the club’s emerging young talent, while Sieb’s first goal gave the Black & Gold another potential attacking option as the postseason approaches.
With nine MLS regular-season matches remaining after the victory, LAFC remains firmly positioned in the Western Conference playoff race as the Black & Gold look to build momentum during the final weeks of the season.
