LAFC Controls the Match but Fails to Finish in 1–1 Draw Against Portland

LOS ANGELES — LAFC dominated much of Saturday’s match against the Portland Timbers, but once again showed a major weakness in their ability to finish chances and close out games, settling for a 1–1 draw at BMO Stadium.
Portland struck first in the 4th minute through D. Da Costa, forcing LAFC to chase the match almost from the opening whistle. After that, the Black & Gold took control, finishing with 58.1% possession, 33 shots, 11 shots on goal and 12 corners. Portland, by comparison, managed only nine shots, two shots on target and no corners.
Those numbers made LAFC’s failure to win even more frustrating. With an expected-goals total of 3.0 compared with Portland’s 0.9, LAFC created more than enough opportunities to take all three points. But despite repeatedly getting into dangerous positions, the final touch was missing.
Portland’s defense deserves significant credit. The Timbers recorded 18 clearances, and their goalkeeper made 10 saves, constantly frustrating LAFC’s attackers. Portland stayed compact, defended deep and forced LAFC to work for every opening.
LAFC finally broke through in the 79th minute, when Denis Bouanga scored the equalizer to make it 1–1. The goal was a reward for LAFC’s constant pressure and showed the team’s determination to keep pushing forward.
However, one goal from 33 shots is simply not enough. LAFC controlled the ball, controlled the territory and created the better chances, but they lacked the clinical finishing needed to turn dominance into a victory. Too many promising attacks ended with saved shots, blocked attempts or poor final decisions.
That inability to finish the game should be the biggest concern coming out of the draw. A team that creates this many chances has to be more ruthless, especially at home. Dominating statistically means little if the scoreboard does not reflect it.
Still, LAFC can take positives from the performance. They were clearly the more aggressive side, dictated the tempo and spent long periods putting Portland under heavy pressure. If LAFC can become more efficient in front of goal, performances like this should result in wins rather than frustrating draws.
