Brooklyn FC Opens Inaugural Season With Historic Victory Over Indy Eleven

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Brooklyn FC made history Sunday afternoon, defeating Indy Eleven 1-0 in the club’s inaugural USL Championship match at Maimonides Park.
The victory marked the beginning of a new era for professional soccer in Brooklyn, as supporters packed Maimonides Park to witness the club’s first-ever men’s match. Brooklyn rewarded the home crowd with a disciplined performance, earning all three points and a clean sheet in front of an energetic atmosphere.
Forward Juan Carlos Obregón Jr. etched his name into club history by scoring the first goal in Brooklyn FC men’s history. The breakthrough came in the 26th minute after Peter Mangione was brought down inside the penalty area. Obregón confidently converted the penalty kick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way and giving Brooklyn a 1-0 advantage.
Brooklyn created several dangerous opportunities throughout the opening half. Mangione nearly opened the scoring earlier with a shot that forced a save, while Obregón remained active around the penalty area as the home side controlled much of the early possession.
Indy Eleven responded before halftime with a series of attacking chances, but goalkeeper Kayne Rizvanovich came up with several important saves to preserve Brooklyn’s lead heading into the break.
The visitors increased the pressure in the second half, spending long stretches in the attacking third while searching for an equalizer. Brooklyn’s back line remained organized, and Rizvanovich continued to deliver under pressure with multiple stops to deny Indy.
Brooklyn nearly doubled its advantage midway through the second half after a dangerous sequence inside the six-yard box, but Indy recovered to block the initial effort before clearing the rebound.
Despite sustained pressure from Indy during the closing stages, Brooklyn remained composed defensively and managed the final minutes effectively. The home side closed out the match to secure the club’s first victory, first clean sheet and first three points in USL Championship competition.
The historic afternoon represented more than just a win. It marked the official arrival of Brooklyn FC in the USL Championship and provided supporters with a memorable opening chapter in the club’s history.
Head coach Marlon LeBlanc praised his team’s performance after the match, highlighting the group’s character and resilience while celebrating a successful debut in front of the home supporters.
