San Diego Wave Defeats Angel City FC in Southern California Matchup

LOS ANGELES — San Diego Wave FC came into BMO Stadium and earned a 2-1 win over Angel City FC on May 9, taking all three points in a close Southern California matchup.
After a scoreless first half, San Diego broke through early in the second half. Dudinha gave the Wave the lead in the 49th minute, finishing a key chance to put Angel City under pressure. The goal changed the pace of the match and forced Angel City to push forward more aggressively.
Angel City responded only a few minutes later. Emily Sams scored in the 54th minute to bring the match level at 1-1, giving the home side new energy and keeping the crowd involved at BMO Stadium.

The match stayed tight through the second half, with both teams looking for the deciding goal. Angel City had moments going forward, but San Diego stayed organized and continued to look dangerous in transition.
The winning goal came in the 81st minute, when rookie Mimi Van Zanten scored her first professional goal to put San Diego back in front. Dudinha also recorded an assist, making her one of the most important players in the match for the Wave.

For San Diego, the result showed composure on the road. The Wave scored twice in the second half and handled Angel City’s response after the equalizer. For Angel City, the loss was a frustrating one at home, especially after finding a way back into the match early in the second half.
The win gave San Diego an important result in the Southern California derby, while Angel City was left looking for more consistency in front of its home supporters.
